Tragedy struck in Obinato Community in Amesi, a suburb of Aguata
Local Government Area of Anambra on Tuesday following the tragic end of
three persons in a 14-feet under ground water tank.
The mysterious death, according to an eyewitness who identified
himself as Chukwuebuka; occurred at about 9 a.m. in a yet-to-be
completed one-storey building allegedly owned by a Lagos-based business
mogul, Alex Muorah.
Chukwuebuka gave the names of the deceased thus: Augustine Dimude, 33
who is a carpenter while Onyebuchi Ezemokwe Chidebere Ezendu are 22 and
23 years old respectively.
He said that the deceased met their untimely death while washing the tanker, which contains some chemicals bought by Muorah.
“I am frightened and worried because we have never seen this type of death before in this town,” Chukwuebuka disclosed.

Chairman of Umudim family, Mr Gilbert Obidiegwu, who also confirmed
the sad incident, explained that that shortly after Ezemokwe went into
the water tank to wash it, he screamed and it attracted the attention of
Ezendu to go for his rescue.
“Ezendu, who was also trapped, shouted for help which attracted
Dimude, a passer-by near the building to go for his rescue, but he too
was also caught up.
“The fourth person, Ebere Oraekwe, collapsed on the ladder while
trying to rescue the three other trapped persons who later died,”
Obidiegwu said.
Speaking further, Obidiegwu said all efforts by another rescuer to
avert the tragedy were fruitless as the victims were confirmed Dead on
Arival the hospital.
He said that the fourth victim, Oraekwe is currently recuperating at
the National Hospital, Mkporogwu, while the corpses of the deceased were
deposited at Visitation Mortuary, Umuchu.
The bereaved and shocked community, which is currently mourning the
sudden demise of the three young men said they suspected ‘foul play’ in
the incident, nothing such incident had never happened in the village.
While wondering why Muorah should purchase what they tagged
“dangerous chemical” and failed to supervise the cleaning of the tank
personally, the Obinato community also appealed to police in the area to
apprehend Muorah, whom it was gathered left the village for Lagos that
morning, for investigation to help unravel the mystery behind the
death.
Report says, the Umuchu Divisional Police Station has detained the
caretaker of the uncompleted building, Ferdinand Ezendu over the
incident.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr
Raphael Uzoigwe, who kept mum, promised to contact the Umuchu Divisional
Police Station on the incident.
